Heaven’s door opened wide on March 26, 2026 to welcome Barbara Ann Armstrong Smith. Barbara, age 83, passed away peacefully in Denison, TX. She was born on August 28, 1942 to John W. and Donnie Armstrong.

Barbara graduated from Denison Senior High School in 1959, where she met her high school sweetheart and husband of 51 years, Johnnie Ray Smith. She was a devoted wife to Johnnie and a loving mother to her children: Joy Brooks, Michael Smith, Suzanne Cox, and Michelle Alverson. Her family was her greatest joy, and she cherished her role as a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Barbara’s life was filled with creativity and passion. She found joy in gardening, reading, painting, and ceramics—hobbies that reflected her artistic spirit and love for beauty. She loved her job in the garden center at Wal-Mart in Denison and helping people choose the right plants. Her warmth and laughter were constants in the lives of those who knew her. Always considerate and willing to help others, Barbara brought light into every room she entered.

A proud member of Beta Sigma Phi sorority since pledging in November 1971, Barbara became an integral part of the Zeta Lambda Chapter. Over the years, she served her chapter in every capacity with dedication and grace. Her contributions were recognized through numerous honors including Girl of the Year, Valentine Sweetheart, Order of the Rose, and Lifetime Member status. Through Beta Sigma Phi, Barbara formed enduring friendships with her BSP sisters that enriched her life immeasurably.

Barbara’s legacy is one of love for family and friends alike. Her fun-loving nature and deep compassion left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing her. May her memory bring comfort to those who mourn her passing.

Barbara was predeceased by her husband Johnnie R. Smith, parents, John and Donnie Armstrong; her sister, JoAnn Aynes; and her son-in-law, Jerry Brooks.

She is survived by her children - daughter Joy Brooks, son Michael Smith, daughter Suzanne Cox (Michael) and daughter Michelle Alverson (Drew); five grandchildren Dakota Brooks, Shea Alverson, Cassidy and Sydney Smith and Jonathan Cox; great-grandchildren Reagan, Ellie, and Christopher Alverson; brother TJ Armstrong, nieces Tammy Wright and Brandi Votaw and nephew Jason Armstrong.
