We gather today to honor, remember, and celebrate the extraordinary life of Billy Joe Hardin—a devoted husband, a loving dad, an irreplaceable Papaw, and a true friend to so many. Billy went to heaven on September 12, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of love, hard work, and deep faith.

Billy’s story began on November 25, 1939, in Tom Bean, Texas, where he was born to his proud parents, Hobson and Earline Hardin. Growing up in the heart of Texas, Billy learned early on the values of honesty, resilience, and an unwavering work ethic. He carried those traits with him every single day, building a life anchored by hard work and an even harder devotion to the people he loved. He was a faithful member of the Community Church of Tom Bean, where those roots of faith and community ran deep.

On May 3, 1959, Billy’s life changed forever when he married the love of his life, Sarah Stephens. For 67 years, Sarah wasn't simply Billy’s wife—she was his partner, his best friend, and the person who stood beside him through every season of life. Together, they shared the joys and challenges, the hard work and celebrations, and all of the ordinary days that, looking back, become some of life’s most precious memories. Their life together was built one day at a time, through commitment, sacrifice, laughter, family, and love. The family they created is perhaps the greatest testament to the love they shared.

Billy was a man who truly lived life with dirt on his boots and love in his heart. He found his greatest joy in the simple, honest pleasures of farming and ranching. He felt a deep connection to the land, and there was nowhere he was more at home than out in the fields. That same passion extended to tractor pulling, a hobby that brought out his grit, his competitive spirit, and the camaraderie he so deeply enjoyed with his friends.

To his family, Billy was a giant. He was a hard-working man who never complained, always putting the needs of others before his own. He was the first person to show up when someone was in need, willing to do absolutely anything for his family and friends. Billy was also the ultimate sounding board. He gave great advice—the kind of wisdom that didn't need a lot of words, just a steady perspective and a caring heart.

His legacy shines brightest through the family he built. He was the deeply proud dad of Jody Miller and her husband Ray, and Teresa Batchelor and her husband Danny. As a Papaw, Billy’s heart only grew bigger. He cherished his grandchildren: Billy Ray Huntsman and his girlfriend Heather Holly, Geoff Miller and his wife Kelly, Chelsey Batchelor, and Chandler Batchelor. He was further blessed to see his family tree grow to another generation, leaving a lasting, loving imprint on his great-grandchildren, Lydia and Colby. Each one of them carries a piece of Billy’s strength, kindness, and spirit.

Billy's circle of love extended wide, encompassing numerous nieces, nephews and extended family, as well as, Don Williams, a dear family friend who was truly more like family than a friend.

While we grieve his absence, we take comfort in knowing he is at peace. Billy was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Hobson and Earlene, and his dear siblings, Bobby, Harold, Thelma, and Emma. What a joyous reunion they must be having.

We would also like to extend a very special thank you to Billy’s personal, live-in caregivers, Amanda and Donna, for their boundless dedication, comfort, and tender care.

Billy Joe Hardin lived a full, honest, and beautiful life. He taught us how to work hard, how to love deeply, and how to show up for the people who matter most. As we say goodbye to this remarkable husband, dad, and Papaw, we carry his memory forward in our hearts, aiming to live with the same generosity and integrity that he did every single day.

Rest in peace, Billy. Your harvest is complete, your labor is done, and your legacy will live on forever.
