IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Bobby Lynn
Hughes
April 16, 1951 – May 19, 2023
Bobby Lynn Hughes entered this life on April 16, 1951 in Sherman, Texas and departed it for his Heavenly home on Friday, May 19, 2023. He was the eldest child of two born to Bobby Ray Hughes and O'leta Williams Hughes. Drafted into the U.S. Army after his 1969 graduation from Sherman High School, he served in the Vietnam Conflict. Bobby was always a proud, patriotic American. He proposed to Linda Gail Belcher while serving in Vietnam and they married on May 26, 1972 in Sherman upon return from his tour of duty. In the years following, he graduated from Grayson College, completing certification as an Electrical/HVAC technician, a field in which he worked for over 40 years until his 2013 retirement from Dimension Electric.
Bobby was very proud of (and rightly so) the many years he served as Sunday School Teacher and Puppeteer for elementary-aged children at Faith Church where he and Linda have been faithful members for many years. He often told that he first came to the Church when it was the First Pentecostal Church on Harrison Street when as a young boy he heard "they had stagecoach rides there". He came and stayed. Bobby loved teaching the young ones, according to his family, and all those who, now grown, fondly remember him greeting them with a broad smile and "high fives". He often told his students, "Here's what it amounts to!" as he taught Sunday School lessons. He always asked the young ones if they would like to see "the turtle in [my] pocket" (but no one can remember ever seeing it!) For many years, until hearing loss prevented him from continuing, he taught with a broad smile, humor, love and a deep love for God's Word. No doubt he would say today, if he could, "I told you this is what it amounts to!"
Successful professional, exceptional Sunday School teacher, selfless Christian that he was, Bobby was also a man who loved his family deeply and took pride in his two sons, their wives and his four grandchildren who knew him as their "Poppy". He never failed to tell each of them as family visits came to an end how proud he was of them. One wonders how many times he thought as they left, "[This] is what it amounts to"!
He was a bird watcher, a "puzzle worker", baseball cap collector and a photographer who didn't like to have his own picture taken, grumbling, " Now I have something to throw darts at"! In retirement, he and Linda took cruises to Alaska and Mexico and traveled to San Diego, New York, Florida, Alabama, and in Bobby's words, "Branson, Branson, Branson!"
His parents, sister-in-law Ike Hughes, brother-in-law Les Stapp, and sister-in-law Lois Stapp predeceased him. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Linda, sons Curt (and wife Michelle) and children Connor and Ashton all of Anna, Texas; son Eric (and wife Stephanie) and children Emerie and Olson, all of Sherman. His brother David and fiancé Jeannine Ford of Rolla, Missouri and sister-in-law Barbara Ray of Sherman also survive him as do many nephews, nieces and cousins.
Visitation will be held from 6:00-8:00 on Wednesday evening at Waldo Funeral Home in Sherman. Family and friends will gather at Faith Church at 10:00 AM on Thursday, May 25 to acknowledge and celebrate a life well-lived. Interment will follow immediately at West Hill Cemetery.
