Obituary

David W. Staggs Sr., 84 years of age, of Sherman, TX, passed away Thursday, May 22nd, 2025, at his home, surrounded by his loving family.

David was born April 9th, 1941, in Lambert, Mississippi, to Odie L. Staggs Sr. and Orphia A. (Whitworth) Staggs. The family moved to Hohenwald, Tennessee, when David was about 6 weeks old. It was in Hohenwald that he attended school. He received his high school diploma later while in the military through Penn State University.

David joined the United States Air Force in 1959. While stationed at Perrin Air Force Base in Sherman, he met the love of his life, Donna Martin. They were married on May 31st, 1962, in Sherman. During the next few years, David and Donna had two children, David Jr. and Dianna. Their family moved as David was stationed at different locations, including Germany, Del Rio, TX, Clovis, NM, Big Spring, TX and Lubbock, TX..

In 1970, David was saved and became very active in the church. He drove a church bus route in Big Spring, Clovis, and Lubbock, something he truly enjoyed, along with teaching the 9-year-old boys Sunday School Class.

David retired from the US Air Force in 1979, at which time, the family settled in Sherman. He was a member of Grayson Bible Baptist Church, where he was very active, serving as Church Treasurer, Deacon, and Usher. He also organized cookouts for ladies' meetings and other activities. He could often be found at the church performing a needed repair.

He worked at Folgers in Sherman, where he also retired.

David had family that he dearly loved in Tennessee, Mississippi, and Arkansas, and he always looked forward to making the trips "home" to visit.

His deepest love was for his wife and family, and providing experiences for them. David loved coaching his son in both baseball and football and missed it greatly when David Jr got too old to participate.  He would take his children fishing and hunting. Dianna recalls a time she was fishing with her father, and he was standing behind her when she cast out her line. David ended up "Hooked" himself! "Ouch!"

As his family grew, including a daughter-in-law and son-in-law, David loved them as his children, and they loved him as a father.

David also loved spending time with his whole family, although he and his brother-in-law would prank each other by trading out putting smelly old skunks in the bed of each other's pickup trucks.

If anyone had a need, David was always there to "fix it". He was the first to lend a helping hand, whether it was cooking at church, plugging a tire, working on a busted water heater, dishwasher, or repairing a car for family or friends. And, he would never ask for anything in return.

David is survived by his loving wife, Donna, daughter, Dianna Bankston and husband Garry, son, David Staggs Jr. and wife Tracy, grandchildren, Blaire Verzi and husband Derek, Whitney Wheeler, Brooke Lawton and husband Jacob, all of Sherman, great-grandchildren, Joshua Billingsley, Kaden Davis, Aubrey Davis, Ava Verzi, and Ryan Verzi.

Also surviving are his sister, Sandra Lovett, sister-in-law, JoAnn Staggs, nephew, Ricky Staggs, nieces, Teri and Janice, all of Tennessee, extended family, Lara Johnson, Gary Lee Bankston, grandchildren, Hunter, Hayden, Ayris, and Maddix.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Odie Lee Staggs Sr. and Orphia (Whitworth) Staggs, grandson, Drew Staggs, and a nephew, Michael Staggs.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 pm, Wednesday, May 28th, at Grayson Bible Baptist Church. The funeral service will be held at 2 pm, Wednesday, May 28th, at Grayson Bible Baptist Church with Rev. Roy Webster officiating.
