Obituary

David L. Van Buskirk, 84, a bear of a man with a servant's heart, passed away peacefully at home Monday,  July 15, 2024. with his wife and daughter by his side. He was born in Storm Lake, Iowa on October 26, 1939 to Lorin D Van Buskirk and Helen Stultz Van Buskirk Bye.

David graduated from Alta High school in Alta, Iowa and went on to attend the University of South Dakota graduating with a bachelor's degree in Business Administration. A member of the Army ROTC, David was commissioned into the United States Army in 1962 and eventually promoted to the rank of Captain. In his six years of active duty, he served in Viet Nam and received a Bronze Star for meritorious service in connection with military operations against a hostile force in the Republic of Viet Nam. He was honorably discharged in 1968.

On September 8, 1962, David married Charlotte Haan in Kranzburg, South Dakota. An only child, David was happy to have nine new brothers and two new sisters in Charlotte's family.  David and Charlotte worked together to build a life that included raising their two children, Scott and Nancy. David's career in distribution and logistics required the family to move often and included time in the suburbs of Chicago, IL; Kansas City, MO; Seymour, IN and finally settling in Corsicana, TX in 1983. David retired as VP of Regional Distribution for True Value (Cotter and Company) in 2003.

David's retirement years were spent enjoying family, traveling, golfing, and walking his beloved Boston Terrier, Bo. He also became active at Navarro College teaching business classes and mentoring students in career development.  A Navarro Bulldog fan, he spent time supporting the football, baseball, and softball teams. Additionally, he was a docent at the  Pearce Museum at Navarro College. He found joy in leading tours of the Civil War and Western Art galleries.

An active member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, he shared his business skills and experience as a member of the Parish and Finance Councils. He also consulted on financial and business matters for James L. Collins Catholic School.  He was appointed to and served on the Catholic Foundation of the Diocese of Dallas.

David and Charlotte moved to Sherman, TX in 2020 to be near family as his health declined. He was happy to be able to spend time with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren in his final years.

He is survived by his wife, Charlotte; daughter Nancy Kirkpatrick (Greg) of Sherman, TX; four grandchildren, Kelly Davis (Matt) of Plano, TX; Lindsay Millerick (Gregory) of McKinney, TX; Emily Hensley (Brett) of Forney, TX; and Christopher Van Buskirk of Boston, MA; three great-grandchildren, Collins and Bennett Hensley and Emmett Millerick; as well as numerous extended family members, including brothers-in-law Anthony Haan (Dona), Charles Haan (Kim), William Haan (Phyllis), Dominic Haan (Sue), Arnold Haan (Marilyn), Vincent Haan (Eleanor) and sister-in-law Carol Knievel (Bob). He was preceded in death by his father, mother, step-father, and son, Scott.

A Rosary will be recited at Waldo Funeral Home in Sherman, TX, Monday , July 22 at 5: 30 PM with the family receiving friends from 6:00-7:00 PM.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:00 AM, Tuesday, July 23 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Sherman. Serving as pallbearers are Greg Kirkpatrick, Chris Van Buskirk, Matt Davis, Gregory Millerick, Brett Hensley, and Arnold Haan. Burial will follow on Wednesday, July 24, at 11:00 AM at Calvary Cemetery in Corsicana.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Home Hospice of Grayson County, the Wounded Warriors Project or the charity of your choosing. The register book may be signed online at waldofuneralhome.com.
