Dorothy Louvada Layman went home to be with her Lord in the late hours of Wednesday, August 28th, 2024.

She was born on April 23, 1927, to Stephen and Vada Burke Mitchell in Westminster, Texas.   After her mother died when she was only 5 months old, she was raised by her grandparents Joe and Nannie Burks of the Pilot Grove Community.

She graduated from Whitewright High School on June 1st, 1944, and on December 23rd of the same year, she married the love of her life, Thomas Layman. Together they enjoyed almost 77 years of marriage until his death on November 26, 2021.

She worked as a bookkeeper for CC Teague, Young Enterprises for 13 years, and finally retired from Hoyt Imports in 1989.  Her real love was serving at her church, West Sherman Baptist Church, where she volunteered as the Sunday School Secretary and played the organ for 30 years. She also loved to cook and will be best remembered for her coconut pie, peach cobbler, and cornbread dressing.

She is survived by her two children Nancy Rhodes of Chouteau, OK and Andy Layman of Carrollton, TX, and seven grandchildren: Tommy Rhodes of Pineland, TX, Laura Rhodes Ensley of Denver, CO, Steven Rhodes of Inola, OK, Mandi Phares of Providence Village, TX, Brian Layman of Melissa, TX, Maghan Achimon of Blue Ridge, TX, and Brad Layman of Boulder, CO.  She also has 15 great-grandchildren:  Laura Beth Rhodes, Samantha and Katie Ensley, Sean and Nick Rhodes, Halle, Hannah, Haidyn, and Haddie Phares, Carter and Harper Layman, and Alaina, William, Landon, and Caleb Achimon.

The family will receive friends from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm, Sunday, September 1st, 2024, at Waldo Funeral Home.

A funeral service will be held 2:00pm, Monday, September 2nd, 2024, at West Sherman Baptist Church, with Rev. Danny Wood officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in Whitewright, TX.

Pallbearers will be Brian Layman, Brad Layman, Matthew Achimon, Stephen Rhodes, Tommy Rhodes, and Larry Rhodes.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to West Sherman Baptist Church in her name or to the charity of your choice.
