Surrounded by family in North Texas and around the country, Dorothy Stout Matthews passed away on September 18, 2025, at the age of 92. She was the best of all of us.

Dorothy Stout was born just east of Howe, Texas, in 1933, to James Richard and Ina Mae Flannery Stout. She married the love of her life, Cecil Joe Matthews, in Sherman in 1951. They had four children, 11 grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren. Dorothy had countless friends. She was active in her church, quilting circle, attending many high school football games, plays, choir concerts, swim meets, and "ball games" of all types. She was kind. She was loving. She was incredibly funny and witty, especially in asides. She was good at card games and dominoes, and she liked shows where the two main characters fell in love, or the ones where they caught the bad guys in the end.

Dorothy Matthews loved. And she was loved by so many. All those lucky enough to know her were made, and made better, by her time here.

One of her many gifts was her ability to make each child and grandchild feel that they were her favorite.

There will be a viewing at Waldo Funeral Home in Sherman from 5 to 7pm on Sunday, September 21 and there will be a ceremony honoring Dorothy's life at Howe Methodist Church at 10am on Monday September 22. From there, she will be laid to rest in West Hill Cemetery in Sherman, alongside her loving husband Cecil Joe Matthews who passed away in 2005.

Carved in the stone above her grave are Dorothy's name, and Joe's, and images of wheat, and a reminder of how she lived. Carved in granite, it says that the greatest of these is love.

Therefore, pursue this love.
