Elizabeth “Liz” McCarthy, 66, passed away on July 21, 2026, in Sherman, Texas.

Liz was born in 1959 in Lubbock, Texas, to Charles and Betty McCarthy. She graduated from Andrews High School in 1978. Liz dedicated her life to educating and inspiring children and those around her. Upon graduating from college, she began her career as a kindergarten teacher. After moving to Denver City, Texas, she served as a special education teacher for several years, then a kindergarten teacher, and ended with being the elementary school librarian. Throughout her career, she inspired a love of reading and learning in countless children, believing in the power of books to spark curiosity, encourage imagination, and make a lasting difference in the lives of her students.

Outside of her teaching career, Liz found joy in life’s simple pleasures. She loved painting, often expressing her creativity through her artwork. If she wasn’t painting, she could be found with a book in hand, reading. She also loved to create in the kitchen, always trying out new recipes. One of her greatest joys was her beloved dog, Finn, who made her laugh with his antics, brought her comfort, and gave her unconditional love.

Liz was a woman of strong faith. She was a longtime member of the Denver City Church of Christ before later transferring her membership to Western Heights Church of Christ after moving to Sherman.

Though she is no longer with us, Liz’s love of learning, artistic spirit, and steadfast faith will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her. She will be remembered for her kind heart, gentle spirit, quiet strength and unwavering dedication to enriching the lives of others. Her legacy will live on through all the children who discovered the joy of reading, and lives that were touched by her compassion, grace, and enduring faith.

She was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her sister, Crystal Ward and husband Marshall of Sherman, Texas. A niece, Katherine, and her family. A nephew, John, as well as her extended family and close friends.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 1, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Waldo Funeral Home in Sherman. Memorials can be sent to the American Diabetes Association or the American Heart Association.
