Floyd Frederick "Fritz" Schemmel, 78, of Sherman, passed away surrounded by family on March 1, 2021.
Fritz was born in Dubuque, Iowa on April 4, 1942 to Mary and Floyd Schemmel. He attended school in Dubuque and Burlington, before graduating from Heelan Catholic High School in Sioux City, Iowa. He served in the United States Navy aboard the USS Krishna and the USS Pocono. He attended Morningside College in Sioux City, Grayson County College, and he graduated with a degree in engineering from Texas A&M in Commerce.
He worked at Texas Instruments for 35 years before retiring. Fritz was an inventor at heart, and he holds numerous patents. He was an avid golfer, and successfully hit a hole-in-one to his great delight.
Fritz married Cheryl Davis in Sioux City, and they had eight children: Robin (Steve) Kingeter, Teresa Ingram, Chris (Kelley) Schemmel, Andrea (John) Ormond, Jason (Faith) Schemmel, Joseph (Donna Jackson) Schemmel, Erin (Jeff) Britain, and Ryan (Erin) Schemmel.
He is survived by his wife, Cheryl, his eight children, 28 grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, his brother, Tom (Mary) Schemmel of Des Moines, Iowa, sisters, Gwen McCarthy, and Leslie Barbour, both of Portland, Oregon, as well as his sisters-in-law, Bette Schemmel of Longmont, Colorado, Pat Hanson of Washta, Iowa, his brothers-in-law John (Nancy) Davis of Marion, South Dakota and Gerald Warrender of Washta, Iowa as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He is proceeded in death by his mother, Mary, his father, Floyd, his stepfather, Leonard Luckritz, and his brother, Ronald Schemmel.
The rosary will be prayed Friday evening, March 12 at 6:00 PM at Waldo Funeral Home. A private funeral mass will be said on Saturday, March 13 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sherman.
