IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Freda
Wood
February 29, 1932 – October 23, 2024
Freda was born on leap day, February 29, 1932, to Walter Noble Franks and Alta Madeline Johnson Franks in Snow Oklahoma.
Freda Graduated from Antlers High School in 1950 and continued her education at Southeastern Oklahoma State University, graduating in 1955 with a degree in Elementary Education and later a Master's Degree in 1986. She married Clifford Wood on May 21st, 1952, in Durant Oklahoma.
She began her student teaching in Mead Oklahoma in January of 1955. After graduation she taught in Mead Oklahoma and Lawton Oklahoma until 1960. In 1960 she moved to St Louis Missouri, for Clifford to attend Washington University to work on his Masters and Doctorate degrees, where she taught at Hamilton Elementary. They moved to Sherman Texas in 1965 where she began her nearly 30-year career at Fairview Elementary where she taught 1st and 2nd grade. At Fairview she made many lifelong friends who were among the closest and dearest people to her. She taught with a deep love for her students and throughout the years when her former students would see her in public, they recalled many fond memories of her and being in her classroom.
Freda was a lifelong member of the church of Christ. She attended Woods St church of Christ faithfully until her health kept her at home. She loved the church and the many cherished friendships she had there. She loved to serve the church and filled many roles by teaching, filling communion cups, making flower arrangements, visiting the shut-ins and those who were ill. Her life of service to the church and to others was a truly Christ like example to her family and others around her.
She lived a full life with a wide variety of interests. She enjoyed traveling with friends in her retirement. Just like her mother, she was a lifelong baseball fan and never missed a Texas Rangers game on TV. She was also a big OU football fan and cheered for the Sooners each Saturday in the fall and teased her UT fan friends each time the Sooners won the Red River Shootout. She inherited a love of gardening from her father and cultivated a beautiful flower garden and enjoyed sharing her flowers with others. She also enjoyed playing bridge.
The fact that she was born on February 29th was always a favorite fact to let her students try to figure out how old she was on her birthday. She celebrated her 23rd birthday this past February with family and friends!
The holidays were always a special time for her. She loved to decorate and set out the good china for holiday meals. The family favorite was her sausage balls, it seemed there was never enough.
Freda is survived by her daughter Sandra and son Jonathan and his wife Stephenie. She is also survived by Granddaughters, Julianne Brayton (Justin), Emily Morris (Kyle) and Ashlyn Wood, and her favorite grandson Joshua. She is survived by great grandchildren Teague Carroll, Travis Carroll, Finley Morris and Graham Noble Morris, her sister Fern Smith and many very special nieces and nephews.
Her 92 years on earth were a well lived testament to a life of service. It is hard to describe how much she will be missed, but we are rejoicing in the knowledge that she has gained eternal life free of the ravages of dementia that plagued her the last few years. Her family would like to thank the staff at the Homestead of Sherman who took such excellent care of her the last few years. She was always happy and healthy and blessed to have a caring staff to take care of her.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 pm, Friday, October 25th, at Waldo Funeral Home.
Graveside services will be held at 2:00 pm, Saturday October 26th, at Odd Fellow Cemetery in Antlers, Oklahoma.
In lieu of flowers, a donation to the American Alzheimer's or to your local church would be greatly appreciated.
