Obituary

George Joseph McGahren, a dedicated husband, father, and community leader, passed away on January 29, 2024, at the age of 94. Born on October 2, 1929, in Bayonne, NJ, to Eugene and Cecelia McGahren, he spent his formative years in Yonkers, NY. George excelled academically, graduating from Roosevelt High School before pursuing his passion for economics at Columbia University, where he earned his degree in 1951. He furthered his education with an MBA from American University in Washington, DC.

George's commitment to serving his country led him to join the U.S. Marine Corps, where he rose to the rank of Captain. In 1955, he married the love of his life, Joan M. Sindt, and together they raised a loving family of four children: David, Joe, Suzanne, and Molli.

Throughout his professional career, George exhibited remarkable leadership and innovation. Joining Johnson & Johnson Company, he distinguished himself as a member of the manufacturing staff, later assuming the role of Director of Human Resources in Sherman, Texas. George's tenure at Johnson & Johnson was marked by his dedication to excellence and his pioneering ideas, leaving a lasting impact on both the company and the community.

Beyond his corporate responsibilities, George was deeply committed to philanthropy and community service. He served on various boards, including those of Sherman ISD, Wilson N. Jones Hospital, and the Grayson College Foundation, where he played an instrumental role in shaping local education and healthcare initiatives.

George's diverse interests extended beyond his professional life. He was a shrewd investor and skilled stock options trader, and he had a creative passion for woodworking and stained-glass artistry. He prioritized health and fitness, remaining active and engaged until his final days.

Tragically, Joan lost her courageous battle with lung cancer and passed away in 2003. In 2005, George found love again with Elizabeth Fortenberry Coleman, with whom he shared a vibrant life in Denison, Texas, and Gulf Shores, Alabama, until her passing in 2022.

Survivors include David (wife Shannon) of Nashville, TN; Joe (fiancé Gloria Rodriquez) of Dallas, TX; Suzanne (husband Rick Morrison) of Richardson, TX; and Molli Murray of Houston, TX. On the Coleman side of the family, there is Pam Silcox (husband Robert) of Florida, Mike Coleman (wife Casey), of Baton Rouge, LA; Mark Coleman (wife Monic) of Louisiana; and Susan Phillips (husband Kary) of Denison, TX. George was the patriarch to 14 step grandchildren and nine step great grandchildren from Elizabeth's family.

George was preceded in death by his brothers Eugene McGahren, Richard McGahren, and Kenneth McGahren, and by his grandson Samuel McGahren.

In addition to his four adult children, George is survived by grandchildren Nicholas Caston (fiancé Alyssa Skalski) of Houston, TX; Charlie McGahren (wife Erin) of Houston, TX; Maggie McGahren Beery (husband Chris) of Nashville, TN; Julia Murray and Ethan Murray of Houston, TX; and two great grandchildren: Brady Caston-Kellegher of Houston, TX and Charlotte Beery of Nashville, TN.
