Henry White Sory passed away on March 20, 2008. He was born in Dallas, Texas, on August 13, 1922 the son of William Horace and Mary Catherine (White) Sory. He is survived by his wife Joy of 62 years; a son, Hank Sory and wife Terry Lee of Athens, Texas; a daughter, Susan Brhlik and husband Buddy of Sherman, Texas. Three beloved grandchildren, Lt. Bryan Sory, U.S. Navy, Kingsville, Texas; Joe Paul Brhlik of Sherman, Texas; and Kristi Lee Brhlik of College Station, Texas. Nephew Jody Sory of Henderson, Texas; and niece Nancy Mullins of Lindale, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers William Horace Sory, Jr., and Joseph (Jodie) Sory.
Mr. Sory has been a resident of Sherman since 1936. He was graduate of Sherman High School in 1940 and Austin College in 1947. In 1942, he joined the Navy as an aviation cadet and became a pilot in the United States Marine Corps in 1943. He served as a bomber pilot in the Southwest Pacific, and was released from active duty in 1946.
Upon graduation from Austin College he became a teacher-coach at Bonham High School and returned in 1948 to Sherman High School in the same position. In 1953 he became principal of Sherman High School. In 1960 he was promoted to Assistant Superintendent for Business and served in that position until 1985, when he retired. This completed 37 years as an employee of the Sherman ISD.
He loved the Bearcats and Kangaroos. In 1952 he was advised by Mr. Byron Davis to do three things: ?Join a service club, be active in the community, and be active in your church.? This advice guided him for many years. He was a member of the Sherman Kiwanis Club for 56 years.
A rosary will be held on Sunday, March 23, at 6:00 pm in the Waldo Funeral Home Chapel. Deacon John LeBlanc and Deacon Thomas Avila will officiate. A visitation will follow the rosary. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 am Monday, March 24, 2008 at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Father Jeremy Myers and Father Antonio Aureus conducting the service. Internment will be at West Hill Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Waldo Funeral Home.
Pallbearers will be: Colonel Jim Shankles, Robert Clements, Lt. Bryan Sory, Joe Paul Brhlik, Jody Sory, and Dr. Rudolph Inman. Honorary Pallbearers will be Dr. Wendell Hubbard and members of the Sherman Kiwanis Club and the Old Bearcats group.
Memorials can be made to St. Mary's Catholic Church Building Fund or to a favorite charity.
