James Matthew “Matt” Townsend was born on January 3, 1981. Matt was born in Sherman, TX to Jay and Susie Townsend. Matt went to be with Jesus on September 29, 2026, at the age of 45 years old. Matt dedicated his life to Jesus at 24. As his love for the Lord grew it became increasingly evident in the lives he touched from then on.

Matt married the love of his life, Emily Sauls, on July 9, 2005. Matt and his wife enjoyed 21 beautiful years as husband and wife. Together they created a wonderful life together and had two children, Noah and Emma. Matt loved his family fiercely.

Matt is a graduate of S and S Highschool class of 1999. He went on to earn a bachelor’s and master’s degree from Southeastern Oklahoma State University. Matt exceled in football and was known for his humor and kindness.

During Matt’s career, he taught English and coached football, and many other sports at S and S, Van Alstyne, Bonham, Frisco, and Texoma Christian School. Matt also taught English at Grayson College for many years. The last few years of Matt’s life was spent faithfully serving as Athletic Director at Texoma Christian School in Sherman.

Matt served as a Deacon at First Baptist Church of Sherman. His ministry was his students and players who he loved dearly. Matt was proud of each and everyone he mentored through his career.

Matt is survived by his wife, Emily, children, Noah and Emma, mother and father, Jay and Susie Townsend, a sister, Brittany Townsend Orr and grandmother, Dorothy Townsend. He is also survived by many nephews, nieces, cousins, in laws, an aunt, uncles and many friends, coworkers and students.

The family would like to thank the staff of Baylor Scott and White Hospital in McKinney, Texas for their kindness and care.

In lieu of flowers, the family would like to ask that donations be made to Texoma Christian School Athletic Department in honor of Matt.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, October 9, 2026 at First Baptist Church of Sherman at 2pm.
