Joann Layman's Obituary

JoAnn Layman, 87, of Sherman died on Friday, November 13 at Texoma Medical Center.  She was born on August 21, 1935 to Hazel & Jim Buckley and lived her early childhood years in Woodville, Oklahoma.   During the creation of Lake Texoma the residents of Woodville had to relocate, and JoAnn moved with her family to Sherman where she met Frank Layman Jr.    JoAnn and Frank were childhood friends and high school sweethearts.   In 1956, JoAnn wed Dr. Frank D. Layman Jr. and they were married 56 years.   Most recently, JoAnn was a resident of The Renaissance Retirement Living Center in Sherman and was so thankful for many new friends and good neighbors.

JoAnn was a dedicated Christian and an active member of Wood Street Church of Christ and Western Heights Church of Christ.   Both congregations were dearly loved by JoAnn and Frank and were a tremendous blessing to their lives.   She graduated from Sherman High School and attended North Texas State University.  JoAnn was committed to supporting many charities, ministries, veteran, and first responder organizations.   She was also a very active member of Meals on Wheels as a young adult and worked briefly for Grayson College.

JoAnn's spiritual gift was most definitely "hospitality".   JoAnn was known for inviting many people into her home and spoiling them with a beautiful table and gourmet meal.   JoAnn was an avid collector of fine china and table décor that was used to treat her guests.

JoAnn is preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Frank Layman Jr., parents and brother William Buckley Sr. She is survived by many family members including her two sons and their wives, Greg & Debra Layman of McKinney and David & Jana Layman of Houston.   She is survived by her beloved sister and her husband, Becky and Wayne McLain of Sherman, her grandchildren, David & Kristi Layman of Denison, Daniel Layman of McKinney, and Krista and Kara Layman of Houston.  Great grandchildren Stephan Layman of Denison, and Ivy Layman of Houston, and her nephew and his family, Doug, Yvonne, and Isabella Hooten of Edmond, OK.

Arrangements are being made by Waldo Funeral Home for a private family graveside service to be held at Holloway Cemetery.    Richard Oglesby will be the officiant.   Memorial donations may be made to Western Heights Church of Christ.
