John Ralph
Burton
April 21, 1918 – June 19, 2018
Sherman-John R. Burton was born in New Concord, Kentucky April 21, 1918 the youngest in a family of 11. He left home as a teen and worked various jobs on farms, construction sites, hospitals, restaurants, shoe stores, electrical repair shops and finally joined the army serving from August, 1942 until March, 1946 during World War II. He became a Mess Sergeant and attained the rank of Master Sergeant before being discharged. He then went to work for the V. A. Hospitals as Chief of Food Service and Production.
He married Dovie Pauline Ashmore February 11, 1944 and raised three sons together until her passing in August 2007. He retired from the V. A. in Los Angeles and moved back to Texas where he opened a cabinet shop and started building cabinets for new homes. He was a lifelong Southern Baptist and served as Chairman of Deacons, Sunday School Director, Sunday School Teacher and was on every committee at one time or another. He was a member of First Baptist Church Sherman for many years where he often volunteered to help those less fortunate. He started a ministry there along with other volunteers baking bread and distributed it to those in need. In June of 2014 he became a member of First Baptist Church Pottsboro where his grandson Joshua Burton is the pastor.
His greatest desire in life was for everyone to know the Lord Jesus Christ as their personal savior. He authored more than one book on that topic throughout his years. He always took his family to church and raised his sons to do the same. He was always ready to help out his kids and grandkids whenever a need arose. He will be sorrowfully missed here on this earth by many, but we all now rejoice that he is with his Lord Jesus and no longer suffering.
He is survived by his three sons. John W. Burton and wife Diana of Suffolk Virginia, Terry R. Burton and wife Debbie of Tulsa Oklahoma and Gregory P. Burton and wife Darla of Sherman Texas. Grandsons Joshua Burton, Christopher Burton and Thanh Churchin. Granddaughters Kim Stanley, Tammy Perry, Ashley Raab, Holly Jaska, Katie Burton, Amanda Burton, Abigail Burton and many great and great great grandchildren.
