Obituary

John Edward McCullough, a farmer-rancher and devoted family man, passed peacefully on June 2, 2024, at the age of 85 while at his home.  He was a life-long resident of the Sherman area and St. Mary's Catholic parish.

John is survived by his loving wife, Nita McCullough; his children Joe, John, and Jeff; his daughter-in-laws Kathryn, Cindy, and Amy; his sister, Patsy Vrla; brother Charlie McCullough; and his 9 grandchildren Cole, Trey, Mike, Morgan, Charlie, Cash, Matthew, Cade, and Madison.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Helen McCullough, and his sister, Mary Margaret McCullough.

John was born to humble beginnings on June 27, 1938, where his family lived in a small one-bedroom farmhouse on the family homestead.  He often shared that they were so poor he slept in a dresser drawer, and they would just shut the drawer if he snored too loud.  He attended St. Mary's Catholic School in Sherman, St. Gregory's College Prep School in Shawnee, OK, and Southeastern Oklahoma State University in Durant, OK where he graduated with a bachelor's degree in business.

Upon graduation he was drafted to serve in the United States Army where he served his country before returning home to assist with care of the family farm which he proudly continued until his final days taking care of his land, cattle, and barking out orders to his children and grandchildren.

On August 5th, 1969, John married the love of his life, Nita Kaye McTee, and for the next 54 years personified the words from their vows "for better or worse".  Nita faithfully served by his side as they built a loving family and positively impacted their community.

John is best remembered for being a strong Christian man, family man, always an honest and loyal friend, hard-working farmer-rancher, and an avid supporter of any sports team that included his children and grandchildren.  He was a man that often hid his thoughts behind those steely, blue eyes and used few words…often leaving you wondering what the real story was behind his evasive grins and guile shoulder shrugs.
