O. H Hubbard, Jr. died on October 8, 2024, at Carrus Specialty Hospital in Sherman, Texas. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 12, at 1:00 PM in the Waldo Funeral Home Chapel in Sherman. Reverend Ricky A. Sommers, Sr. will officiate. Interment will follow at West Hill Cemetery in Sherman, Texas.
Military Honors will be accorded by the United States Army. The family will greet friends on Friday, October 11, from 3:00 to 7:00 PM at the funeral home.
Born in Sherman, Texas, June 4, 1945, to O. H. Hubbard, Sr. and Minnie Mae Patterson, O.H. graduated from Fred Douglass High School in 1964. After graduation, he attended Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls. In the spring of 1966, he joined the United States Army and attended boot camp in Ft. Polk, Louisiana.
He served in Vietnam with the 1st Calvary Division and was promoted to Corporal and later Sargeant. In May 1967, he was critically injured while jumping out of a helicopter. He was medevacked to Clark's Air Force Base Hospital in Japan. He was later transferred to Portsmouth Naval Hospital in Virginia, where he stayed 6 months. After returning to Sherman, O. H. attended Grayson College and worked at Hardwicke-Etter Company. He later worked for Pete Hudgins Cattle Co.
Starting in 2002, he volunteered weekly at the Bonham VA, and he was named Volunteer of the Year in 2007. He was a life member of the DAV and Vice-President of the Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 973. He served as a mentor for veterans attending the Grayson County Veterans Court. He was a Veteran Advocate and fundraiser for the Military Order of the Purple Heart. In 2016, he was honored as a Texoma Hero in recognition of his military service, as well as his service to his community after leaving the military.
O.H. is survived by 2 daughters, Misty Brown and Starla Brown; son, Trevor Brown; 7 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren; sisters, Joyce Duckett, Clara Jones, Beverly Hansboro, and Ruby Petty; brothers, Ronnie Harrell and McCloud Luper; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Barbara Brown; daughter, Felicia Brown; sisters, Barbara Harrell, Gloria Isaac, and Patricia Harrell; and brother, Kenneth Harrell.
