Ovid Cole, 93 years old, of Sherman, TX, passed away Saturday, April 18th, 2026, in Sherman.
Ovid was born in Denison, TX, on December 17th, 1932, the son of Cleve and Mable (Crowse) Cole. He was a very bright child, learning to read before he started first grade at Shannon Schools. He graduated from Denison High School at the age of 16. He attended Austin College, where he was a member of the AC Golf Team. He was invited to play golf for TCU but declined the offer in order to marry his wife, Jo Price, on July 19th, 1952.
It was at this time that he began his career at Perrin Field Air Force Base, where he worked in communications until 1972. He then worked in Austin, TX, with the Internal Revenue Service and later for the Army Corps of Engineers in Dallas until 1988, when he retired at the young age of 55.
After retirement, he did consulting for the IRS, began a lucrative hobby of restoring cars (primarily for his kids and grandkids), and played a lot of golf.
As a young man, he caddied at Woodlawn Country Club. Over time, he developed a passion for the game and considerable skill, winning several tournaments. He played courses all over North Texas and Southern Oklahoma.
Ovid loved animals, the Dallas Cowboys, and the Texas Rangers. He loved to read and read books his whole life.
His greatest achievement was being a devoted and loving husband, father, and Grandpa. He was loved beyond measure and will be missed forever!
Preceding him in death are his parents, Cleve and Mable Cole, sister, Joy Allen, niece, Judy Hastings, grandson, Brent Cole, and son-in-law, Larry Stumpp.
He is survived by his wife of almost 75 years, Jo Price Cole; 5 children, Ovid Cold and his wife Pam; Rob Cole and his wife Tammy; Vickie Pearson and her husband Bob; Terri Stumpp; Sue Sterling; 6 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
A service celebrating Ovid’s life will be held at 10:00 am, Thursday, April 23rd, at Waldo Funeral Home Chapel. Pastor Mike Perry of Merriman Hills Baptist Church will officiate.
The family will receive friends at Waldo Family Center immediately following the service.
