Obituary

Ronald K. VanZandt, a proud veteran, dedicated community leader, and deeply loved family man, passed away peacefully on June 7, 2026, at the age of 78. Born on January 12, 1948, Ronald lived a life defined by honor, duty, and an enduring devotion to his country, his fellow veterans, and his family. A true patriot, Ronald answered the call of his nation during a pivotal moment in history, serving with distinction in the United States Army from August 2, 1967, to August 1, 1969. During his service, he deployed to the front lines of the Vietnam War, where his bravery, resolve, and character shone brightly. He was honorably discharged at the rank of Specialist E-5. For his meritorious service and exceptional skill, he was decorated with several honors, including the American Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Sharpshooter Medal, and the Drivers Medal. Ronald’s commitment to service did not end when he took off the uniform. In 1983, he joined The American Legion, beginning a lifetime milestone of dedication that spanned thirty-six years until 2019. As a Lifetime Dedicated Member, Ronald was a pillar of the organization, working tirelessly to support local veterans and advance the Legion's mission. Throughout nearly four decades, he held countless posts and leadership positions. To list every office, committee, and chair Ronald commanded would easily fill the pages of a book; he simply never

hesitated when his community or his fellow veterans needed him. Beyond his structured leadership roles, Ronald brought joy, camaraderie, and a wonderful sense of humor to his civic life. He was incredibly proud of his involvement with the GNUTS Club, where he gleefully held the distinguished and memorable title of Emperor XXXII Root Beer—a position that brought him great joy and endless fond memories. Above all his military and community achievements, Ronald's greatest title was that of a loving father and grandfather. His family was his anchor, and the pride he took in watching his children and grandchildren grow was immeasurable.
