Obituary

The life of Sharon Kay Williams Bynum was directed by God and beautifully lived as a true example, a testament, to the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Kay was born in Gainesville, TX, on November 4, 1944, to Ernest and Hazel Williams and was the oldest of three siblings that included her brothers Rob and Tim Williams. From Gainesville, the family moved to Nocona, TX, where Ernest owned a pool hall and a dairy farm – an interesting combination to say the least. It was here in this small, rural community that Kay began learning the power of persuasion as she convinced her brother Rob that it would be a good idea for him to let her tie him to a baby calf just to see what would happen. He did, and IT happened.

From Nocona, the family moved to Dallas, TX, as Ernest began building custom and spec homes in the Oak Cliff and South Oak Cliff areas of the city. Kay attended and graduated from South Oak Cliff High School in 1962. From there, she attended radiology school at Parkland Hospital training to become an X-ray technician. At Parkland, one of her instructors was Jerry Bynum. Subsequently, Kay graduated as the “Honor Grad” of the class. Go figure.

The couple married in May 1965 and moved to Ft. Worth as Jerry was working at Harris Hospital. In 1969, their son Drue was born. From Ft. Worth, Jerry assumed the position of Radiology Director at a hospital in Roswell, NM. Their time in New Mexico was truly a turning point in Kay’s life. Stephanie was born there in 1971. It was also in Roswell that Kay accepted the Lord as her personal savior at a James Robison conference. And, from that moment on, her life reflected Christ in all she did.

From New Mexico, the Bynum family moved to Tishomingo, OK, where they ran a True Value Hardware store and attended a little country church called Bullard Chapel Baptist. At Bullard Chapel, Kay began to be refined by the Holy Spirit and truly began her journey of sanctification.

From Tishomingo, Jerry once again re-entered the life of Radiology Director at Medical Plaza Hospital as the family moved to Sherman, TX. Kay continued living as a servant leader at West Sherman Baptist Church. Then, a move to Pottsboro, TX, came next as Jerry accepted the Director position at Texoma Medical Center with the stipulation that he couldn’t live in Sherman. There the family served faithfully at Georgetown Baptist Church.

The call to move on once again came in 1981 as the family moved to Muenster, TX, as Jerry assumed the Director role and Kay assumed the role of technician at the hospital in Muenster. Their time in Muenster was a cherished one as they became true members of the community.

Kay taught Sunday School at First Baptist Church in Muenster and discipled many young women in her time there. Jerry and Kay poured their lives into those around them in Muenster. It was an especially gratifying time in their lives that continued growing them in their faith.

Their last move came in 1999 as they moved back to the Pottsboro area. Drue and his wife Nora were living on Nora’s family’s farm. It was a shared dream that all of the family would live on the farm someday. Through Nora’s mother, Nelda, Jerry and Kay were able to purchase a parcel of land and build a house. Simultaneously, Nelda and Steve Cooper also built a house on the farm. So, in a matter of a few short years, the “family” was together – Drue and Stephanie and their families, Steve and Nelda, Nora’s aunt Marilyn, Nora’s cousin Michael (who lived there already) and finally Jerry’s Mom, Birdie and her husband Les Houser. Through it all, Kay ministered to every member of the family. She also served diligently once again at Georgetown Baptist Church and then Legacy Bible Church.

As can be seen by Kay’s history, certain things were indelibly important to her – her faith, her family and her church. She baked thousands of pound cakes and Texas chocolate sheet cakes for people on all kinds of occasions as well as complete meals for grieving families. She discipled many young women throughout her life and prayed for hundreds of people. Kay shared the Gospel in all she did. She believed and lived the discipline of making time daily to meet with her Lord and Savior. She encouraged others. She walked alongside people. She cared for the elderly and widows. She taught her children and grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was salt and she was light. She heard, loud and clear, upon entering heaven, “Well done, my good and faithful servant!”

Kay was predeceased by her parents, Ernest and Hazel Williams and her brother Rob Williams. She is survived by her other brother, Tim Williams. Also survived by her loving husband of almost 61 years Jerry. The two were truly a dynamic duo who modeled Christian love. She is further survived by her son Drue and his wife Nora along with their children Halle and her husband Clayton Langford, Cooper, and Cole; Stephanie and her husband Kevin Heady and their children Kameron and wife Rainey, Karson and wife Alex with their boys Hunter and Duke.

A Memorial Service will be held at the home of Drue and Nora Bynum on April 11, 2026, at 10:30am. All are invited. Come casual. Enjoy the memories of a remarkable woman. 813 Well Road, Denison, TX 75020
