Obituary

Stanley Wade Hopson was born on August 5, 1941 in Sherman to Benjamin Troy Hopson and Eula Burchfield Hopson and passed away on Wednesday, April 26, 2017 in his home.

Stanley attended Sherman schools and later his love of music led him to broadcasting school in Dallas. He was an industrious young man and worked at various jobs during high school. He then joined the Army as soon as he could to serve his country. He had many plans for the future but they were changed by an accident at age nineteen that injured his spine. After months of therapy and rehabilitation, Stanley was discharged from the Army and moved back to Sherman. He had many interests and many friends – some from his school days and others made thru the years. He loved fast cars and participated in drag racing locally. When he became interested in bowling he joined several leagues and traveled to different states to compete in larger tournaments. He also enjoyed playing (and often winning) shuffleboard, driving his motorcycle built with hand-controls, carpentry, remodeling and even tried snow skiing. He was a disc jockey at many events including dances at the Elks Lodge and AMVETS, weddings and high school reunions.

In addition to the things he did for fun, Stanley tried to help his community. He joined the Elks Lodge and held various positions, did volunteer work at the Bonham VA for many years, served on the TAPS Board of Directors, helped start the Lone Star chapter of Texas Paralyzed Veterans, went to Washington D.C. to show support at senate hearings for the Americans with Disabilities Act and worked with local city council to improve handicap accessibility.

Stanley is survived by his wife, Shirley; step-daughter Vanessa Linton; grandchildren Patrick Hughes and Megan Paris. His brothers Roy Hopson, Larry Hopson and Richard Hopson, sisters Reba Hopson, Donna Brown, Sharon King, Beverly Hopson and Pam Hurley.
Stanley was preceded in death by his parents, brother Charles Hopson, and sisters Carol Jean Holder and Paula Marie Hopson.
