Obituary

Stephen (Steve) McMillan Keller died peacefully at home on September 5, 2026 in Sherman, Texas. Steve was born in Houston, Texas on June 24,1935 to Margaret and Cordell Keller.

At a young age he and the family moved to Plainview, Texas where he graduated from Plainview High School in 1954. He then finished his formal education at Southern Methodist University (SMU) in 1957 with a degree in Management.

After college, Stephen married Gretchen Havstad and welcomed son, Scott and daughter, Robin. Steve’s work in the financial services industry took the family to Houston, Texas. After the sudden passing of his first wife, Gretchen, in 1973, Steve was joined by his mother, Margaret, to help care for the family. In 1976, Stephen accepted a transfer to Dallas with First National Bank (later NCNB then Bank of America) to head up the Investment Management Division. During this time Steve became an avid runner and member of the downtown Dallas YMCA where he would run the streets of Dallas at lunch with a group of lifelong buddies.

In 1978, after a year of dating, Steve married Anna Skaggs Howdeshell, combining into a family of seven (adding Paul, Amy, and David). In 1979, Steve left his banking position to purchase and operate the Bruce Ragsdale Sheet Metal Company in Dallas. Despite a steep learning curve, and with a love of the business and its employees, Steve and Anna successfully operated the business until its sale in 1986.

Steve went back to work at Bank of America in an investment management role until his retirement in 1997. In 2008, Steve and Anna moved to Sherman, Texas and built their home (and barn) on acreage that has been in the family for 90 years.

Throughout his life Steve most enjoyed being outdoors. He received his Eagle Scout in 1952. In high school he played on the golf team, sinking a hole-in-one in 1949. He served in the Airforce National Guard and carried a private pilot’s license. Steve was also an expert marksman tallying a World Championship in skeet shooting in 1974. He grew up hunting and fishing and spent many a day in various parts of Texas hunting ducks, geese, doves, quail and deer. He was particularly fond of flyfishing for trout in Colorado and Montana.

Steve was a devout Christian and fourth generation Episcopalian. In Houston, the family attended St. Martin’s Episcopal Church and in Dallas the Episcopal Church of the Transfiguration. After moving to Sherman, Steve attended St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church with his wife, Anna, where he performed roles on the Vestry and as Treasurer, Sr./Jr. Warden and Parish Delegate. Steve was a dedicated Meals-on-Wheels deliverer for the last 15 years, often delivering to folks far younger than himself.

Steve was preceded in death by his father, Cordell Cline Keller and mother, Margaret McMillan Keller: son Paul Ray Howdeshell; his father-in-law, Harold Skaggs and mother-in-law, Leona Skaggs.

Steve is survived by his wife of 48 years, Anna Lee Skaggs Keller of Sherman, TX; his son, Scott McMillan Keller and his wife, Katherine; daughter, Robin Keller Martin and her husband, Doug; son David Howdeshell and wife, Stacy; daughter Amy Johnson and husband, Rod; daughter-in-law, Susan Howdeshell; his grandchildren Carson Stephen McMillan Keller and wife Ellen; Cordell Cline Keller II and wife Louisa; Cole Martin, Morgan Martin, Tyler Howdeshell Blalack and husband Joseph, Jacob Howdeshell, Alison Noel Johnson, Sarah Howdeshell Chapman, and husband Peter; Emily Howdeshell; his great-grandchildren Camden Blalack and Everett Blalack; his sister-in-law Patsy Pierce Sullins and husband Lester; and brother-in-law Harold Skaggs, Jr. and wife Jan.
