Valerie (Pruitt) Washington, 66, of Denison, Texas, passed away on November 1, 2025. Born in Kansas City, Kansas, to the late Eugene and Doris Phipps, she was the fourth of five children raised in a home filled with faith and love.
Soon after high school she married Curtis Pruitt, and from this union were born 2 children, Currissa and Curtis Jr. Later in life, she found love again and married Lemuel Leon Washington with whom she remained until her death.
A lifelong educator, Valerie dedicated her career to inspiring students and colleagues to reach their fullest potential. She pursued advanced studies in Educational Technology, completing all but her dissertation toward a doctorate, and was known for her commitment to mentorship and lifelong learning.
Faith guided every step of Valerie's life. She served joyfully in church communities across Kansas City, Sherman, Denison, and Houston, sharing compassion, encouragement, and service with all who knew her.
She was preceded in death by her parents and brother Eugene Clyde Phipps Jr. Valerie is survived by her husband, Lemuel Leon Washington of Denison; daughter, Currissa (Pruitt) Alsobrooks and husband Dillard of New Caney, Texas, and their sons Dean and Ian; son, Curtis Pruitt Jr. of Virginia, and his children Jordynn, Jayce, and Parker; and siblings James Newsome of St. Joseph, Missouri, and Norman and Linda Phipps of Kansas City, Missouri.
A Celebration of Life will be held Friday, November 21, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at Waldo Funeral Home, 619 N.Travis Street, Sherman, Texas, officiated by Minister Tylyn Dehorney.
Valerie's faith, love of family, and devotion to education will continue to inspire all who were blessed to know her.
