Vern left his earthly home and entered his heavenly home with his Lord and Savior, The Lord Jesus Christ on Friday, November 16. A celebration of his life will be held Saturday, November 24 at 11:00 am in the sanctuary of First Baptist Church with Dr. Mike Lawson officiating.  A military burial will be held at Akers Cemetery in Sherman at 10:00 am preceding the memorial service.

Vern was born June 12, 1945 in Mineral Wells, Texas, to Robert & Loraine Harris.  Shortly after his birth the family moved to Oklahoma.  After graduating from McAlester High School in 1964, Vern attended Southeastern Oklahoma State University.  After 2 years of college, Vern married his high school sweetheart and best friend, Kay Stokes Harris on August 12, 1966.  He then served his country in the United States Marine Corps for 2 years, serving 1 tour of duty in Vietnam.  After completing his military service, he and Kay returned to Southeastern Oklahoma State University in Durant, Oklahoma, where he completed his bachelor's and master's degrees in Education.

Vern & Kay moved to Sherman in 1970 where Vern taught school with Sherman ISD for 36 years, retiring in 2005.  He also was a real estate agent for 22 years, especially enjoying helping couples buy their first home.

Vern and Kay were blessed with two sons, Chad A. Harris born September 15, 1970 and Brent J. Harris, born March 28, 1973.  Vern is so proud of these two Godly young men.

Vern has been a member of First Baptist Church, Sherman since moving to Sherman in 1970.  He served the church in many capacities including Deacon and Trustee.  His greatest passion was having the privilege of teaching and mentoring young men. He exemplified a Godly man who looked to scripture to fulfill God's teachings regarding marriage and family.

Vern is survived by Kay, his wife of 52 years, his son Chad and wife Daria, their 3 children Daniel, Hope and David; and Brent and wife Tiffani, their 3 children Hannah, Emma and Andrew; his Mother Loraine Harris of Yukon Oklahoma; brother Kim and his wife Shelly Harris of Norman Oklahoma; Mother and Father-in-law Claude and Madlyn Stokes of McAlester, Oklahoma; sister-in-law Lana Stokes of Albuquerque, NM.
