Obituary

Walter Whitfield, age 75, of Sherman, ascended to his eternal home Thursday, April 27 th at his residence, following an extended illness.

Walter James Whitfield was born on November 5, 1947, in Pontiac, Michigan, to the late Charles Whitfield Jr., and Odessa Whitfield-Gabriel. Walter was born 4 th of 13 children. Walter accepted Christ at an early age at Greater New Hope Missionary Baptist Church.  He attended Fred Douglass Schools and graduated with the class of 1966.  He was a member of the 1964-1965 State Champion Fred Douglass Football team. Walter was an avid golfer and when not on the golf course he could be found teaching some youngster in one of the city parks or just hitting balls.  He placed in numerous tournaments all over the country.  He was very active in assisting veterans to get signed up to receive their VA benefits.  Walter never met a stranger. Walter was known city wide, and you never had to guess what was on his mind because he was going to let you know what was on his mind because he was going to let you know whether you asked him or not. He was always willing to help anyone he could.

He married Gwendolyn (Ms. Winkie) Ross on April 10, 1987. Walter is survived by his wife and his daughters, Leslie Anderson Anna, TX, Tracey Ross, Sherman, TX and Shaunte Wilson-Parker Sherman, TX. 7 brothers Rev. MacArthur Whitfield (Linda) Saginaw, Michigan, Anthony Whitfield (Mildred Faye) Houston, TX, Gary Whitfield (Lisa) Roanoke, TX, Glenn Whitfield Arlington, TX, Nathaniel Whitfield, Dallas, TX, Jerry Whitfield (Victoria) Sherman, TX, Herman Gabriel(ann) Houston, TX, Charles Whitfield ( Debra) and sisters Juliette Whitfield-Jones (Llyod) Carson, California, Gloria Whitfield-Thompson (Fred) Sherman, TX, Ophelia Whitfield-Bell (Claude) Sherman, TX. Grandchildren Rodney Mason II, Donuelle McKee-Hunt (LeDaun), Colby Nelson, Robin Parker. Host of great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. Mother-in-love Metsey Anderson, Sacramento, CA. Brothers in-law Coplain Ross (Carmen) Chicago, Il, Walter Anderson (Robbie) Sacramento, CA, Ricky Lynn Harris (Cathy) Sacramento, CA, Eric Harris Sacramento, CA, Randy Anderson Sacramento, CA. Sisters in-law LaDale Jones Headland, AL, Sherri Estabrook Dripping Spring, TX, Metsey Bryant Sacramento, CA, Delisa Anderson-Bronson Sacramento, CA, Vicki Powel Ft Lauderdale, FL. A host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.  He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents Charlie and Willie Whitfield, Robert and Odelia Hammond, stepfather Lee Henry Gabriel, brother Charles Homer Whitfield and sister Willie Jean Whitfield and stepsister Rose Gabriel. 3 childhood golf friends, Kenny Calhoun, Dickey Green and Don Thompson all of Sherman, TX.

A public visitation will be on Friday May 5 th from 2 P.M. to 7 P.M. at Waldo Funeral Home.

The funeral service will be Saturday, May 6 th at 1 P.M. at the Fellowship Baptist Church, 1615 S. Travis St., Sherman. Rev. Stanley Sanders will serve as Host Pastor and Rev. Charles H. Brown, Jr. will deliver the eulogy. Burial will follow in the Veteran Garden at West Hill Cemetery with Military Honors.
