Willa Arlene Mitchell's Obituary

Willa Arlene (Johnson) Mitchell left her earthly home on February 8, 2021 at 2:30 a.m. Willa had a strong faith in God, and her family is confident that God welcomed her into heaven saying, "Well done, my good and faithful servant." Willa's service will be at Waldo Funeral Home on February 10, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. She will be buried next to her husband at Friendship Cemetery with grandsons Jeremy Roberts, Ryan Roberts, Derrick Roberts, and Christopher Mitchell serving as pallbearers. There will also be a livestream available on Regina Roberts' Facebook page.

Willa (Johnson) Mitchell was born July 31, 1933 to Carl Cecil and Doris Luella Thomas Johnson in Greeley, Colorado. She graduated with honors from Brownfield High School. She then attended Hardin Simmons University where she graduated with her Bachelor of Business Administration. She also received the Top Woman Graduate award. Her son, Kevin and her granddaughter, Grace would also go on to graduate from Hardin Simmons, with Grace receiving the same honor that her grandmother did.

Willa went back to her hometown of Brownfield to teach school where she taught her younger brother Eldon to type. He wasn't as thrilled as she was. She meet Glen H. Mitchell at Brownfield High where he was also teaching. They began dating and were married on August 13, 1955. Glen and Willa later moved to Union, Texas where they both taught school. It was there that their daughter, Regina, was born. Willa's mother, "Grandmother Johnson," took care of Regina every day while Glen and Willa taught school.

Later they moved to Henrietta, Texas where Kevin was born. Many lifelong friends were met, and a love for the people of Henrietta began. Next they moved to Wilson, Texas, where Glen served as the district's superintendent. Willa couldn't teach in the same school, so she taught in Tahoka, Texas. While at Wilson, Glen and Willa has the privilege of adopting Vicque.

Glen helped to lead over one hundred Lay Renewal Weekends that reached out to Texas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas. Willa loved them as well and was his partner in support and prayer while he led them. They meet very many wonderful lifetime friends through these revival experiences. One was Ned Culp who was on the school board at Howe. When they needed a superintendent of schools, they asked Glen to come. So they moved to Howe in 1971. Willa was able to teach in the same school there and taught her favorite 4th grade.

Glen and Willa moved back to Henrietta, Texas in 1977 where Kevin and Vicque both graduated high school. At one point she had her brother Eldon and his wife Linda move to Henrietta, where she enjoyed being more involved in their lives and with their kids.

In 1983, Glen became the school superintendent of Iowa Park, Texas, where both he and Willa both retired. Willa taught at Electra and later at Iowa Park. Glen and Willa were always very active in the Baptist church wherever they lived, and enjoyed serving wherever they were needed. Glen was a deacon, and Willa was a very gracious deacon's wife. In 2010, Glen and Willa came to Sherman, Texas to be closer to Regina. Glen passed away in 2011, not long after moving to Sherman. A piece of Willa died when Glen died because Glen was so wonderful to Willa. He took such good care of her and spoiled her by doing anything and everything for her.

Willa is preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Doris Johnson; brother Carl Cecil (Pat) Johnson, Jr., and his wife, Virginia; brother Eldon Johnson and his wife, Linda; brother-in-law, Dale Williams; sister-in-law, Huberta Mitchell Ross; mother and father-in-law, Hubert and Edith Mitchell; and niece, Diane Schultz.
