Edith Virginia Mccormick's Obituary

Edith McCormick

Sherman- Edith Virginia McCormick, age 86, died in her home on Monday morning, June 10, 2013. Services will be held at Waldo Funeral Home of Sherman at 4 PM on Thursday, June 13th. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Rev. Steve Rice and Rev. Robin McGee of First Baptist Church Sherman will be officiating. Entombment will be in Resthaven Mausoleum in Lubbock, TX under the direction of Resthaven Funeral Home.

Mrs. McCormick, of Sherman, TX, was born on January 10, 1927 in Burkett, Texas to Mary Gladys Evans and her husband, Roy Albert Evans. She attended schools in Brownwood and Abilene and graduated as valedictorian from Abilene High School in 1943 and Draughons Business College in 1944. In 1949, she graduated magna cum laude from Hardin-Simmons University receiving a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry. Mrs. McCormick was accepted into Southwestern Medical School but chose instead to marry the love of her life, Loyd Russell McCormick, Jr. on January 23, 1949, in Abilene, Texas. They lived and farmed in Wilson Texas until 1988, when what the Lubbock Avalanche Journal deemed a "miracle cotton crop" allowed them to retire. They moved to Lubbock and later to Sherman to be close to their family. Mrs. McCormick's grandchildren called her "the best cook in the world!" Her lifelong passion for medicine inspired her oldest grandson to become a doctor and her medical opinions were sought after by family and friends.

Mrs. McCormick is survived by her daughter, Suzanne Barker and her husband Dr. Larry Barker of Sherman, Texas; a sister, Mary Lou Fletcher and her husband Clyde Fletcher of Buffalo Gap, Texas; her grandson Dr. Russ Womble and his wife Nichole Womble of Oklahoma City Oklahoma; her grandson Ryan Womble and his fiancé Leslie Thornton of Boston, Massachusetts; and her granddaughter Rachel Womble of New York City, New York.
