Robert Alton Hillerby, 69, passed away suddenly on Saturday, Oct. 5, 2013.
Robert was born to the late Robert Lee and Mary Lou Hillerby on March 7, 1944, in Quanah, Texas. He graduated from Amarillo High School in 1962 and attended classes at Amarillo Junior College. He married Alice Marie Tucker, of Amarillo, on June 21, 1963.
He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1966, attended basic training in Fort Bliss, Texas, and completed photographic training at Fort Monmouth, N.J. He was shipped to Vietnam as a combat photographer with the First Air Cavalry Division. He was awarded the Air Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, a Good Conduct Medal and a Meritorious Unit Citation. He was honorably discharged in 1969. He later served a number of years in the Oklahoma National Guard and the U.S. Army Reserve.
Robert wrote Shooting Vietnam: Reflections on the War by Its Military Photographers with fellow vet Dan Brookes. The book is planned to be published in 2014. He was a director of Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 973 and worked with veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan as a facilitator in the Military Veteran Peer Network.
Robert owned Hillerby Printing in Sherman with son David. He was an active member of Luella First Baptist Church.
He is survived by wife Alice Marie, of the home; children Michael Robert, of Norman, Okla., and David Scott and Lori Rene, of Sherman, Texas; dear friend and brother veteran, Robert Blevins; grandchildren Robin Blake, Riley Morgan and Jessica Rose of Norman, Okla,. and Nathan Carl, of Sherman.; brother Forrest Ray, of Sherman, and sister Sue Carroll Long, of Wilmington, Ohio, and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, friends and loved ones.
A viewing will be held 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 9 at Waldo Funeral Home. 619 N. Travis St., Sherman. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 10 at Sherman's Fusion Bible Church, 2515 West Lamberth Rd., officiated by Pastor Harvey Patterson of Luella First Baptist. Interment will be at White Mound Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be sons Michael and David, Robert Blevins, Larry Ford, Thomas Tucker and Nathan Banks.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Vietnam Veterans 973, 4900 Texoma Parkway, Sherman, Texas 75090. Checks should be made out to VVA 973, designated for the PTSD group.
