After graduation she went to work for the J. C. Penney Company. She married Ira Altove Smith on October 15, 1944. She transferred with the Penny Co. to Amarillo and Big Springs in order to be with her husband while he served in the military. At the end of the war they returned to Sherman where she assisted her husband in the floor covering business. In 1960 she went to work for Jefferson/Pilot Life Insurance Co. as district secretary. When Jefferson/Pilot moved their offices to Dallas, Nita got her real estate license and went to work for Davis Realtors. She was in the real estate business for 24 years. She received numerous awards for her outstanding performance in a profession she loved so much.
She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother who was "Mimi" to her grandkids, who were the center of her affection. Her faith was a simple and complete love of God and her family. Nita loved working in her yard and often said she felt closer to God when she was digging in the dirt. She also enjoyed listening to books on tape and doing her daily crossword puzzles.
Her greatest accomplishment was rearing two daughters and having them grow into the loving and responsible women they are today.
Nita was very active in their school activities. She was president of Jefferson School P.T.A. and was presented Life Membership in the Texas Congress of Parent Teachers Association. She served as Leader of Camp Fire Girls for many years.
Nita was active in many civic organizations. She served as President of Soroptimist Club of Sherman and was honored with a life membership in the organization. She has been a member of Business and Professional Women's Club since the 60's and President of Toastmistress Club.
