Melvin Harris
Sherman- Funeral services for Melvin Harris will be held at 10:30 AM Friday, October 14 in the Chapel of Memories at Cedarlawn Memorial Park. Pastor Morris Cook of the Ector Baptist Church will officiate and military honors will be provided by the US Air Force. Mr. Harris, 93, passed away Monday, October 10 at Wilson N. Jones Regional Medical Center.
The youngest of eleven children, Melvin was born November 6, 1922 in Ivahoe, Texas to the late Elbert W. and Dolly (McWhorter) Harris. On December 24, 1939, he and Edna Earl Hopson were married in Madill, Oklahoma. Melvin served overseas during WWII in the Army Air Force from 1942-1946. After the war, Melvin got in the meat packing business. He owned and operated the Southern Packing Company and Big M Packing Company in Sherman and Denison. Mr. Harris was a 32nd Degree Mason and member of the Travis Street Masonic Lodge as well as a Shriner with the Hella Temple Lodge in Fort Worth.
Mr. Harris will be remembered as a Christian man who devoted his life to helping others. He was always willing to lend a helping hand and expected nothing in return. He is survived by one son, Dr. Melvin Harris and wife Glenene of Dallas; daughter, Kay Dodson and husband Buddy of Ector; three grandchildren; and five great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and ten siblings.
