Sherman- Funeral services for Haskell Wheeler will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday January 14 at Waldo Funeral Home. Glen Williams will officiate. Burial with military honors will follow at Van Alstyne Cemetery with Mr. Wheeler's grandsons serving as pallbearers. Mr. Wheeler went to meet his Lord and Savior, Sunday, January 8 at the age of 95.
Haskell was born August 21, 1921 in Van Alstyne, Texas to the late Cicero and Lucille (Adams) Wheeler. On December 27, 1941 he and Beatrice Beall were married in Van Alstyne. Mr. Wheeler was a WWII veteran, serving in the US Army in the Philippine Islands where he was assigned to the 745th Combat Engineer Heavy Equipment Group. He was discharged in 1946 and returned home to the family farm in Van Alstyne. In 1957, he and Beatrice moved to Sherman where Hack worked as a butcher at Gus Turley's Grocery and Piggly Wiggly. Mr. Wheeler later worked for himself doing construction, home remodeling, and general home repair.
Mr. Wheeler was always very active in church. He served as a deacon for most of his life in the Baptist churches he attended. He went on several mission trips with his camper to build churches in various parts of the country. Even in his final days at the Brookdale at the Willows, he conducted weekly Bible studies.
Mr. Wheeler will be remembered for his kindness and generous spirit. Although he didn't have a lot, he was always willing to share what he had with others. Known to everyone as "Hack", the grandkids, nieces and nephews would line up to be tickled and the family was always entertained by his stories and jokes, regardless of how many times they had heard them. He is survived by three children, Jerry Wheeler and wife Brenda of Tom Bean, Barbara Smith and husband Larry of Denison, and Mack Wheeler and wife Melissa of Clarksville, Arkansas; six grandchildren, Norman Wheeler and wife D'Nese, Lorna Nipp and husband Johnny, Shannon Worthy and husband Kevin, Josh Wheeler and wife MariBeth, Adam Wheeler and wife Danielle, and Jake Wheeler and wife Brittney; thirteen great grandchildren; two sisters, Maudine Arnold of Sherman and Dorothy Morrison of Van Alstyne; and his special friend Mary Lewis of Sherman. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, and his wife of 73 years.
The family will receive friends from 1:00-2:00 PM Saturday prior to the funeral. The register book can be signed online at waldofuneralhome.com.
