Obituary

Mrs. Mildred Cannon ascended to her Heavenly Father Wednesday, November 7, following a short illness at Texoma Medical Center at the blessed age of 88.

Mildred Davis Cannon was born December 15, 1929 to the late Thomas J. Davis and Lilla Jones Davis in Culloden, Georgia. Her father was a farmer and her mom was an educator. Mildred grew up with a strong work ethic and a passion for education. Because of a strong influence from her Mom, she finished High School at the tender age of 14 years old. She attended Fort Valley State College (a Historically Black College and University) in Fort Valley, Georgia and graduated at age 18. While at Fort Valley she met and eventually married Carl V. Cannon Sr. She was Miss Fort Valley State and Carl was the captain of FSU's undefeated football team and later was inducted into the school's Hall of Fame.

The couple spent several years in Dallas before settling in Sherman permanently. Their marriage produced 3 children: Carl, Cecile and Rose. Mrs. Cannon worked for over 20 years as accountant for Johnson & Johnson; also as a substitute school teacher and as the Director for North Sherman Community Center. Even though J & J provided the setting to use her Accounting skills, by and large, the "Center" was where the majority of Shermanites remember her. The "Center" during that era was the heartbeat of the Community and where the action was, especially for teenagers. In her later years, she was fond of saying that at one period of time she knew every "African-American family that lived in Sherman.

Mrs. Cannon accepted Christ at an early age, joining the Macedonia Baptist Church of Culloden, Georgia. After moving to Sherman, she became a member of the Greater New Hope Baptist Church and remained there until her death. She was a member of the choir and was the Church Secretary and handled account payables. She served as secretary for over 63 years! Mrs. Cannon was a gifted soloist and sang at numerous Church functions in the Grayson County area. She wrote and delivered numerous tributes for families who had lost their "loved ones".

Mrs. Cannon was preceded in death by her husband Carl V. Cannon Sr, daughter Cecile Cannon Johnson; brothers Ambrose, W.C. and Syrus Davis; sisters Olivia Davis Lowe, Rosa Fagan, Elizabeth Traylor and Lilian Stafford. Surviving family members include her son Carl V. Cannon Jr. (Delores) and daughter Ertha Rose Cannon. She has 4 Grand-Children: April Brown (Grady), Virgil Cannon (Brianna), Crystal Cannon Brooks (Al) and J'Maria Cannon. Her Great Grand – Children are Bryce and Christian Brooks, Laila Brown, Carrah Cannon, Chloe Rose Cannon and Cameron Cannon. She also has a whole host of nieces and nephews.

The Home Going Celebration will be Friday, November 16 at 10 A.M. in the Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church, 1615 S. Travis, Sherman, Texas. Rev. Gahlen Warren, Sr. is the Host Pastor and Rev. Steve Stell, Pastor of Greater New Hope Baptist Church, will officiate.

Interment with the sacred committal and farewell will follow in West Hill Cemetery, Sherman, Texas.
