Obituary

Ralph Courtney, Sr.

Denison - Ralph Courtney, Sr. passed away peacefully at home in Denison, TX on Monday, May 24, 2021 surrounded in much love by his family. Ralph was born November 19, 1937 in Henderson, TX to Carey and Ollie Mae Courtney. He married Patricia Tuttle on July 20, 1954 after he stole her from his best friend. Ralph graduated from Lamar College and went to work for JCPenny's. His skills were heavily sought after within the JCPenny's Corporation to revitalize marketing and merchandising, turning the brand around.

Ralph was an entrepreneur most of his life, opening Pants America, Extension One, and Courtney's. He was a banker, a homebuilder, a developer, a restaurant owner, and a philanthropist.

He and his wife, Pat, faithfully served the Lord together throughout their sixty-five years of marriage. Together they were heavily involved in civic and church activities in Pottsboro and in Mexico upon retirement. He was President of the Chamber of Commerce in Pottsboro, a co-founder of American National Bank of Pottsboro, helped establish the Resale Barn in Pottsboro, and helped found Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Ajijic, Mexico. His blessed family life was filled with laughter, love, humor, kindness, an abundance of happiness, treasured by family and friends. Ralph was a man of strong work ethic, generosity and deep faith in Jesus, highly treasuring the Word of God. He worked hard and played equally as hard, enjoying square dancing and traveling with his wife and grandkids. His grandkids most remember his storytelling abilities, his tractor, his puppet Otis, and his yellow firetruck.

Ralph is survived by his siblings, Harley Courtney and wife Ann, Trula Burton and LaNell Mayberry; children Ralph Courtney, Jr. and his wife, Jackie, Kay Smith and her husband, Phil, and Gary Keith Courtney and his wife, Hope; his grandchildren, Betsy Haggard and husband Ryan, Courtney Woodrom and husband Kyle, Trey Courtney and wife Kendi, Philip Smith, and Samantha Hall and husband Jeff; the cherry on top, his great-grandchildren, Emarald, Rylee, Paige, Parker, Cadence, Bradley, Grayson, Hadassah, Cooper, and Levi.
